How to Lock Down Your Facebook Account and Prevent Impersonators

How to Lock Down Your Facebook Account and Prevent Impersonators

Have you ever received a friend request from someone you know you’re already connected with? Chances are, it’s not a glitch — it’s someone pretending to be your friend with a fake or cloned account.

Impersonation scams are a growing problem on Facebook. Scammers create lookalike profiles, send friend requests to everyone on your friend list, and then try to scam or phish them.

If you want to stop this from happening to you — or if you’re already seeing signs of it — follow these steps to secure your Facebook account and protect your friends and family.

    1. Make Your Friends List Private

Impersonators target your friend list to send scammy requests.

Here’s how to hide your friends list:

    • Go to your Facebook profile and click on Friends.
    • Tap the three dotsEdit Privacy.
    • Set “Who can see your friends list?” to Only Me.
    • Also set “Who can see the people, Pages and lists you follow?” to Only Me.

This makes it harder for scammers to find your social circle.

    2. Limit Who Can Send You Friend Requests

You don’t need friend requests from total strangers.

    Change your settings like this:

    • Go to Settings & PrivacySettingsPrivacy.
    • Under “How people find and contact you”, change:
      • “Who can send you friend requests?”Friends of Friends.
      • “Who can look you up using your email or phone number?”Only Me.
      • Turn off “Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile?”

    3. Review Your Public Info

Every little detail makes impersonation easier. Clean up what people can see on your profile.

    Steps:

    • Head to your profile and click Edit Profile or the About section.
    • Limit visibility of your:
      • Birthday
      • Hometown
      • Phone number
      • Email address
    • Set each to Friends or Only Me, especially if you don’t need them public.

    4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

This adds an extra layer of security, even if someone guesses your password.

    How to do it:

    • Go to Settings & PrivacySettingsSecurity and Login.
    • Find Two-Factor Authentication and click Edit.
    • Choose to receive a login code via SMS or use an authenticator app.
    • Turn it on and follow the prompts.

    5. Lock Your Profile (If Available)

Facebook’s Lock Profile feature hides most of your details from non-friends. It’s currently only available in some countries.

    Check availability:

    • Go to your profile.
    • Tap the three-dot menu next to “Edit Profile”.
    • If you see Lock Profile, tap it and follow the instructions.

    6. Report Fake Profiles Pretending to Be You

If someone has already created a fake version of your account, report it immediately.

    Here’s how:

    • Go to the fake account’s profile.
    • Tap the three dots under the cover photo.
    • Click Find Support or Report Profile.
    • Choose Pretending to Be SomeoneMe.

Ask your friends to report it too — the more reports, the faster it gets taken down.

    7. Warn Your Friends

A simple post can stop a scam before it spreads.

    Sample message:

Hi friends – I’ve seen fake Facebook accounts pretending to be me and sending friend requests. If you get a duplicate request that seems off, please don’t accept it. Report and block the profile instead. Thanks for keeping an eye out!

Bonus Tip: Do a Yearly Privacy Checkup

It’s a good habit to revisit your settings at least once a year — or sooner if you notice suspicious activity.

    Final Thoughts

While you can’t stop someone from trying to impersonate you, you can absolutely make it harder for them to succeed. Taking 10–15 minutes to follow the steps above can help protect your identity and keep your social circle safe from scams.
